What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide variety of injuries and ailments. It stems from Traditional Chinese Medicine, which focuses on the state of our health being determined by the balanced form of Qi (chee). This Qi flows through 12 pathways, or meridians, located all throughout the body. Typically, pain, dysfunction or an injury is indicative of a disruption to the flow of Qi, or energy. Fine, sterile filament needles are inserted into particular acupuncture points along the meridian, which allows the flow of Qi to be restored and the body to heal more effectively. These acupuncture needles also help to promote blood flow and healing agents to the area, as well as increase endorphin levels in your body to help with the pain.

5 Benefits with Acupuncture Treatment

By receiving acupuncture treatment from a registered physiotherapist, you will experience the following 5 benefits to help you get closer to being pain free!

Reduced Stress

Acupuncture treatment can lower stress hormones, improve your mood, reduce anxiety, and improve your overall feelings of happiness and wellbeing.

Reduced Pain

In addition to addressing the Qi in your body, needling in physiotherapy can assist in reducing tension and pain in muscles that may be contributing to your injury.

Immunity Boost

Specific points along your meridians and body can be unlocked to improve your flow of Qi using Acupuncture. In doing so, your body’s neurological, immune and endocrine systems are awakened (among others), thus improving the overall function of your body.

Improve Energy Flow

Unblocking points that restrict your Qi can have a huge effect on your body’s overall system. Your energy will increase as your body is now functioning at an optimal level. Acupuncture will allow your Qi to flow and improve the balance in your body and reduce pain for good.

Improve Movement

Similar to IMS and Dry Needling, Acupuncture can target muscles and help restore movement to the body. Muscle function can often be inhibited due to injury, illness, or lack of Qi. Use Acupuncture to get back to doing what you love!

Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture Therapy

During your first physiotherapy visit, your registered physiotherapist will ask about your health history. Then, he or she will examine your body and perform some additional physical tests depending on your individual health needs. Using these unique assessment tools, the physiotherapist will be able to recommend a proper treatment plan to address your particular condition.

To begin, you will lay comfortably on a treatment table while specific points are targeted based on your assessment. Most people feel no or minimal discomfort as the fine needles are gently placed in these targeted points to trigger your natural healing process. The needles can stay in your body between five and 30 minutes. These needles are sterile, one-time use and are made of stainless steel.

The frequency and number of treatments differ for each person and is also dependent on how complex their injury or condition is.  Many people report that they experience dramatic relief in the first treatment. For complex or long-standing chronic conditions, one to two treatments per week for several weeks up to several months may be recommended. Usually acute problems, require fewer visits.

Your registered physiotherapist will develop an individualized treatment plan that includes the expected number of treatments will be discussed during your initial visit.

During and or after treatments, many people report that they feel very relaxed. Some people often feel quite tired. The body has undergone significant changes and will need to rest to recuperate.
The goal is to regain balance in the system and your physiotherapist may also use additional tools to assist in your rehabilitation program.
Additional approaches may include:

  • Hands on manual therapy
  • Exercise to strengthen or release
  • Education
  • Specific movement retraining
  • Posture retraining
  • Coaching for return to exercise
  • Strategies for pain or symptom management
